Carolina Tree Care is thrilled to introduce you to Andrew Wharton, the newest ISA-certified arborist on our team! Read on to learn about Andrew’s experience, how he fell in love with the tree care industry, and the many ways that he can help you care for the trees on your property.
For Andrew Wharton, it all started with rugby. He began playing for the Charlotte Rugby Club as a teenager, and one day one of the men on his team offered him a job at his tree service. He'd heard that Andrew liked to rock climb, so he thought he'd be a perfect fit. Andrew, on the other hand, was skeptical—he didn't know anything about tree work and had no sense of what it would be like. Despite his apprehension, Andrew decided to take a day to check out the work.
When Andrew showed up to the shop, he was surprised to see more of his rugby teammates—they all already worked at the tree company. The work he witnessed was no joke. It was tough and exhausting, but it was also rewarding in a way that resonated with Andrew.
“The work was definitely physically demanding, but the camaraderie more than made up for the brutality of the work,” he says. “I was absolutely hooked.”
More than 30 years later, Andrew is still in the tree business—and loving every minute of it. He graduated from Appalachian State University with a BA in Literature in 1995 and earned his certification from the International Society of Arboriculture in 1997.
Early in his career, Andrew's focus was on helping his team complete every tree care job efficiently and safely. As time went on and Andrew took on new roles, tree work came to mean even more.
“Now I enjoy the long-term relationships I have with clients. I am proud that people trust me to be the steward of their trees,” he says.
Andrew will be covering sales in the Greensboro and Durham/Chapel Hill, NC area for Carolina Tree Care. The fact that he loves research will make him an invaluable resource to have on your property maintenance team, whether you’re sprucing up your own home or managing a group of neighborhoods for an HOA. He’s an expert when it comes to the mechanics of different trees, the insects in our local ecosystem, and the effects the seasons have on trees and plants.
Thirty years later, Andrew is still involved with rugby, too. He's been a volunteer youth rugby coach for the past 7 years. When he’s not doing something rugby-related, you might find him cycling on the greenway or on a trail. Also, fun fact: Andrew can ride a unicycle!
